They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse In Your Soul
An odd one this, as there’s literally no rhyme or reason to it. I’m not a fan of They Might Be Giants; I’ve had little exposure to their music beyond this and a few other popular singles – and I seem to have a propensity for mistaking some of their stuff for Weezer. It’s geek-pop that I like to sing at karaoke (even though the ending goes on a bit). But hey, this isn’t about the song…
I have a good friend, Mark Corfield, who I have known since my early teens. We’ve been through some good times, some great times, some times we’ve not spoken for a while, some times he’s lived at mine, he’s been both my best man and like a brother. There was a time when we were seeing two women who came from Devon and went to university in Lancaster together. And it’s one of these women who noted this:
For some reason, completely unrelatedly and without collusion, we both seem to associate this song with Mark.
There’s no reason why, there’s no explanation, there’s nothing in the lyrics that hints at a link to his activities. And yet, the two of us share this association between the song and him. I don’t get it.
Maybe it’s because he’s my little glowing friend?
